What is education?
McCourt asked his creative writing students to evaluate themselves and to ask themselves what they learned. When evaluating his own performance as a teacher, he states that he was a terrible teacher. What do you think? Do you think education is more than just going to classes, getting good grades? Do you think teaching is more than just preparing students for standardized tests?

First of all, I think going to school has two aspects, a learning aspect and then a catch-all, mainly consisting of learning to socialize with other people and learning civics (e.g., learning the pledge of pledge of allegiance and all that).
I've learnt that there are really two kinds of learning...learning facts and learning how to think. In school we learn points of grammar, like what the verb in a sentence is, which is useful, but it relies more on the brain as a repository of information rather than being able to synthesize and
generate and create.
I think a well-rounded education comprises of all these things. Some are certainly more difficult to teach.
Maybe McCourt was good at teaching students how to think and that was his strength as a teacher.
