Loss

The main theme of this book seems to be "loss". Carlos loses his country and his whole life by the time he is 11 and leaves Cuba. Cuba itself is lost to the people who were there as Fidel Castro took away many liberties and a way of life. In what other ways does the author express this theme of loss?
