True Face of the Earth
In an interview, Nancy Whiteley, author of "True Face of the Earth", was asked what the title of her piece meant. She said that the title came from a feeling that "everything I was taught to believe from my father turned out to be wrong. The fact that he dumped me totally negated my belief tha fathers are supposed to care for their children. This, unfortunately, has followed me through life and severly damaged my relationships with all men" The title came from a sentence in Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince "The aeroplane has unveiled for us the true face of the earth." She said she didn't learn the truth about the face of the earth during the plane rides with her father, everything she believed was a lie. Why does Whiteley equate "the Earth" with her life? After all, the true face of the earth could refer to the mountains, valleys, oceans, etc. Or even if it refers to the lives of people, why should it refer to only her life? Do you think Whiteley believes that her life and what happened to her is important?
