Painting the real world
The painters in this book are nervous about depicting the real world. The tree says "I don't want to be a tree, I want to be its meaning." (p. 51). Why do the painters not want to depict the real world? What do you think, when you see a painting or a photograph of a tree, do you look at it and see only the tree, or do you see more?
