First Novel

The Emperor of Ocean Park is Stephen L. Carter's first novel. His second novel, New England White, was recently published. The Emperor of Ocean Park received a lot of attention because, prior to this first novel, Carter had written a number of non-fiction works, including the controversial Culture of Disbelief and is a professor at Yale Law School. Many people hesitate to read first novels from unknown authors. Do you normally read first novels? If so, why?

I like books on their own merits rather than reading particular authors...if the reviews are good I'll read it; the person who wrote it is secondary to me.

I don't have favorite authors.
