Rabies

When Calpurnia sees the dog walking down the street, she immediately knows what is wrong with him-he has rabies. Rabies rarely affects domestic animals today, but at the time (1930s), rabies did affect domestic animals. Why do you think the author includes this story in the book?

Yes, I always thought this part was something of a digression...but I think it was included to perhaps show something about Atticus's character.

It always made me think of Old Yeller.
