Learning to Read

Scout is disappointed when she goes to school because she already knows how to read and her teacher is horrified. Why do you think Miss Caroline says that it is "best to begin reading with a fresh mind"? Do you remember when you learned to read? Scout was reading the newspapers. Did you read newspapers when you first began to read? Do you think Scout's view of the world was affected by the fact that she read newspapers?
