Corporate Support
Nike is one corporation that has combined merchandising with Katrina relief. Nike created the "Nike Katrina Logo", a pelican which resembles a Phoenix symbolizing rebirth and the state of Louisiana rising above the devastation. The Katrina logo also includes a heart shape which "pays homage to the residents who continue to persevere after Katrina." Nike is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of items with the logo to a Katrina Relief fund. A "Nike Katrina Give Back Pelican T-Shirt" is being offered by the Tulane online store for $19.98. What do you think about the merchandising of Hurricane Katrina in this manner?

It depends...where are the profits going? If all revenues (after covering costs) are going to victims (or New Orleans in general) then I belive the program is admirable as a fund-raising tatic. If Nike or Tulane is keeping a portion of the money, I think it's shameless.
The Katrina event does not require advertising to raising awareness to it. Creating "solidarity" is also a poor excuse, I have an equally dim view of all the people selling American flags after Sept 11th, 2001.
