This is the headline of an AP story posted on September 25. The story reports that Hurricane Katrina evacuees have been victims or suspects in less than half as many homicides in Houston this year as they were in 2006. This is because there are fewer evaucees living in aprtment complexes where many of the evacuees were living. The estimates are that about 100,000 evacuees still live in the Houston area, but the number of families recving federal housing aid is now about 8,000 compared to 32,000 at its peak. Through mid-September 2006 there were 61 Katrina related homicides with the evacuees the victims in 24 cases and the suspects in 22 and the other 15 were cases in which one evacuee was accused of killing another evacuee. In 2006, the surge of violent crime involving evacuees caused Houston residents to rally to urge the mayor to send the evacuees back to New Orleans.
Brinkley himself is a Hurricane Katrina evacuee living in Houston.
Do you think that the way in which many of the evacuees left New Orleans, is part of the reason why violent crime increased?
