Footnotes

Brinkley's book contains almost 40 pages of footnotes. Are you consulting the footnotes/endnotes are you read or do you usually ignore them? Do you find the presence of all of these notes distracting or does it make you feel the book is more "authentic"? Have you investigated or read any of the articles he notes?
